Party Pics... LOTS of Pics!

I'm finally getting around to organizing ALL of the pictures from Sydnie's birthday and birthday party. The week and weekend was a BUSY one, but we had such a blast with our parents here! We only wish everyone could've stayed a little longer.

Before I post pictures from all the festivities, I'll start with this little slideshow I put together of Sydnie's first year. We had it playing (minus the captions) at her party, and I know all the grandmas and grandpas got a kick out of it. It's AMAZING how much this child has grown in a year!

Now, I'll get on with more pictures (since I know that's what most of you want to see anyway!)

Birthday morning! Enjoying her blueberry pancakes, fresh blueberries, and scrambled eggs!

All done with breakfast. Now onto her gifts from her WONDERFUL great grandparents!

We picked Grandma B up from the airport, and headed to Portobello at Downtown Disney for Sydnie's birthday dinner.

Sydnie (but mostly Grandma B and Mommy) enjoyed this slice of chocolatey heaven!

Now onto Saturday, the 24th, for some party pictures!! The day was a WHIRLWIND!! Matt and I were up early, showering, having breakfast, and downing as much coffee as we could before the chaos began. Terry, Kellee, Mom, and I got started on some of the food and set-up early on. We had gotten some decorations out the night before, but still had a bit to do that day. Mom and I ran out to pick up the cake, and have balloons blown up (little did I know that had I dropped the DANG balloons off ahead of time, they'd have had them ready for us on Saturday. That would've saved us about 45 minutes! Oh well!) We RACED home, with about 30 minutes to spare before guests would be arriving. Everyone was scrambling to get things "pretty", and to get food out and ready. It was so awesome to have all of our parents' help that day... I really don't know how we would've pulled the day off without them!

Everyone started to arrive JUST as things were officially "guest ready". My feet were already so sore, but I put on my game face, and we had SUCH a great time!

A Whole Year?!

Well, the dust has settled a bit after the crazy, busy week we've had, so I thought this would be a good time for some reflection.

I honestly CANNOT believe an entire year has passed since Matt and I became parents. Such a whirlwind the year has been, but truly the BEST year of my life (and I know Matt would say the same). Sydnie has been such a precious gift from the Heavens; sometimes I think I must have done something REALLY good in this life for God to bless me with something so wonderful. I think about my parents a lot lately, and the comment I used to hear occasionally from them, "You'll 'get it' when you're a parent yourself." Well, Mom and Dad, I totally get it. The love you feel for your babies is immeasurable. It makes my heart hurt to look at her sometimes- it's so full, that it actually hurts. And the fears I have about her well-being, or the desire to just make her happy, if nothing else; it's something I just didn't understand before. To put someone else before you, not because you have to and it's your responsibility to be "selfless", but because you WANT to. I remember the first time I heard that phrase "pride and joy" since becoming a mom, and I thought, "Yes, that's exactly what Sydnie is." She fills my life with joy, and the pride I feel about her and because of her is incredible.

With the fast-approaching birth of our son, I realized that I hadn't ever actually written out the story of Sydnie's birth. I know to some of you, that might sound silly, but I'm one of those "write it down, or you'll forget it" people. So, while I'm in the mood to reflect... here goes!

Matt and I knew what our baby's birthdate would be long before she actually arrived, because my doctor knew my anxieties about not having our families with us when I delivered. Dr. Benezra said that October 20th would be "the day", and I spent every waking minute counting down to that day! I remember being "SO READY" in the weeks leading up to my induction. We hurried up to get our new house all ready for our families' arrival, and finally on the 17th of October, my dad got into town. Matt and I took him out to dinner that night, and the next day, Dad and I got pedicures together! (Yes, my dad is proud of his nicely-groomed toes!) Later that day, my mom, brother, and Matt's mom, Terry arrived. We grilled out, and had a nice big dinner together. On the 19th, I got up and got myself showered, I shaved my legs, did my hair and makeup, and we all went out to brunch at Duran Golf Club. When we were there, our waitress asked when I was due, and I answered by saying, "Oh, I'm going to the hospital after this." She looked a little puzzled, but I explained that I was scheduled to be induced that evening. After brunch, we came back to the house to pick up our hospital bags, made a quick stop at Target, and headed down to Holmes Regional Hospital.

We got to the hospital around 4:30 p.m. and were taken to our Labor and Delivery room right away. I remember looking around and thinking, "OK, wow, this is really it. I'm going to have a baby in this room!" As soon as we filled out our registration forms, my IV was put in, and I was wearing my sexy hospital gown, I was given Cervadil (a medicine that's inserted to ripen the cervix) to get things started at about 5:00. Matt and I both fell in love with our labor and delivery nurse, Megan. She was just WONDERFUL, and was totally on the same page with me through my whole labor. My contractions started almost immediately, which I really wasn't expecting, and by 6:00 they were already 2-3 minutes apart! I was still only 1 centimeter dilated, which I had been for weeks, and was 80% effaced (or "thinned out"). I couldn't understand why with these strong contractions, my cervix wasn't catching up and dilating, but I tried to focus on breathing through the pain instead. Matt massaged my back with the hand-held massager we packed, and did the best he could to keep me relaxed. We brought a few movies with us to watch that night, but I don't think we were half-way through the first movie before I was in hard labor.

I labored all night, and at 1 a.m., after not sleeping at all, Megan suggested some Stadol to take the edge off of the pain. I hated the idea of Stadol, as I was told by our birthing class instructor that it would make me feel "loopy and drunk", but I agreed to it anyway in hopes that I'd be able to rest for a little while. I felt the medication "take the edge off" right away, but I felt like I'd had 5 appletinis, and someone was sitting on my back. Not a great feeling, but I was able to snooze for about an hour. By 2 a.m. my contractions were right on top of eachother, with NO breaks in between. Megan checked me, and I was STILL only 1 centimeter dilated, but was 100% effaced. She was baffled by this, and I was beyond frustrated. Megan called Dr. Benezra at home, and gave him a play-by-play. He agreed that since it had been a good 9-10 hours of pain, that it was time for an epidural. He also asked Megan to ask me if I'd ever had any procedures done on my cervix, and mentioned a LEEP procedure, for example. I told her no, since I'd never heard of a LEEP, and I asked what that was. She explain that is was basically when a doctor takes a piece of the cervix for biopsy when precancerous cells were detected. I said, "WAIT, is that like a colposcopy?! Because I've had a colposcopy done!" (Yes, it is). Megan let out a sigh, and told me that the reason I wasn't dilating was because of the colposcopy, and that it had probably left scar tissue on my cervix that was keeping it from opening up. She said that they'd have to manually break the scar tissue open to let my cervix do what it needed to do. The thought of someone reaching up in me to "break up scar tissue" made me cringe... as if the regular cervical checks weren't bad enough!!! Megan said I would NEED my epidural before she could do it though.

In comes the annethesiologist. To me, the epidural was one of the worst parts of the whole labor process. Before then, I wasn't allowed to get up to go to the bathroom and empty my bladder because I'd had the cervadil in the whole time (yes, ALL NIGHT with a full bladder, AND horrible contractions to boot!) So, in order for the epidural to be inserted properly, I had to sit up and hunch over, and Sydnie's head was so low that the pressure on my bladder brought me to tears. As soon as we got through that, I was laid back down, and was told to give the medicine about 15 minutes to take effect. Megan cam in shortly there after to get to work on my scar tissue. Without going into too much detail, IT WAS AWFUL. I felt like my insides were being ripped apart. But it worked. At 4 a.m., I was dilated to 3 centimeters. FINALLY!!! Now it was just a waiting game, since I was already totally thinned out, I just needed to get from 3 to 10 centimeters, and I could finally start pushing! Most of the next few hours were a blur, but the vague memories I do have are just staring at the fetal heart monitor and the contraction monitor. I watched (and felt) my contractions go up and tip the scales, and go back down. It took THREE MORE HOURS to dilate another centimeter. I was beyond exhausted and frustrated, and my pain was becoming more and more intense. I knew that my epidural was wearing off. A new anethesiologist came to visit, and he mixed a new cocktail for me. STILL IN PAIN, even after the new dose. I felt defeated by the pain, and the fact that my body was not working like I wished it was. But Megan, Matt, and Dr. Benezra were my cheerleaders. They said this was GOING TO HAPPEN. I knew that I needed to go inside myself for more strength, and gather myself so I'd have to energy to push. I breathed and focused like I didn't know I could for the next few hours. Even though my epidural had failed me, and the pitocin I was given when my contractions started to slow down made everything SO MUCH stronger, I got through it all. Just after our families arrived at the hospital, Dr. Benezra broke my water around 10 a.m., and the real pressure began. It was instantaneous that Sydnie moved down, and I was fully dilated! Matt's mom and my mom were in the delivery room with us from then on.

I started pushing just after 11 a.m. It felt GOOD to push. Finally, I was doing something "productive" with my contractions. I knew I wanted to watch my baby being born in a mirror, but as soon as the mirror was wheeled over, and I caught a glimpse of my swollen "parts", I made Megan move it right away! I pushed a few more times, and when Sydnie started to crown, I asked to have the mirror back. It was amazing and surreal to see that little head coming out of me! I found a tile on the ceiling that became my focal point, and other than a couple glances at the birthing mirror, that's where my eyes stayed. Matt was amazing. He was working so hard to help me pull myself up while I was bearing down. I had been pushing for 45 minutes when Dr. Benezra told me to reach down and grab my baby. At 11:54 a.m. on Monday, October 20, 2008, I pulled my baby daughter onto my chest, and felt a love that I could NEVER put into words come over me.

Sydnie Layne weighed 7 pounds 13 ounces, and was 21 inches long. She was a little jaundice, and got to spend a little time in her "tanning bed" after she was born. She was, and still is such a sweet baby.

Maternity Photos

Just a few...

Has it really been over a month since my last post?? SO much has been going on around here lately, and I feel badly that I've kept all of you out of the loop for all of it!

We are all doing well, and really just enjoying the off season. I think after what a crazy year in baseball we both had, we appreciate this time of year even more than ever. It's been VERY hot for the past month or so, and today we're expecting record highs. YUCK.

Sydnie is getting bigger, sweeter, and funnier by the day. She is standing really well on her own now, and has taken a couple steps on her own, but still doesn't totally trust those little legs. Soon enough, she'll be all over the place, so I'm just trying to enjoy these last few days of her "babyhood". It's SO hard for me to believe that my sweet little bundle is just a week and a half away from being a year old. I've been really tearful about it lately, actually. Lord only knows how I'll hold it together on her actual birthday, and at her birthday party. I have so many memories of this passed year. Sydnie has brightened our lives in so many ways, I could never put my love into words. I'm working on a little montage of pictures, and if I can figure out how to add videos into it, I'll do that too.

I'm feeling well, but am continuously amazed at how soon all the pregnancy discomforts have come the second time around. This little boy is VERY active- up just about all day, kicking HARD, and sleeping all night. Oh, how wonderful would it be if those sleep/ wake patterns continued after his birth!? Matt and I are continuing on with our Bradley Classes, and we're coming up on class 5 out of 12. If you're not familiar with the Bradley Method, check out the link I have on the right side of the page. I still have my moments where I wonder if I'm capable of achieving my goals of a natural birth, but then I remember that Sherry (our instructor) is SO knowledgeable, and will give us all the information and help we need! I just can't believe how close we are to having TWO CHILDREN!! It's going to be a crazy and wonderful ride, to say the least!

I hate to make this a quick blog, but I promise to post again SOON! Here are some pictures before I go...

Visiting Ms. Tina and brand new Baby Madison in the hospital last week (we were playing in the waiting room here).

Daddy and Baby just before their first "date" without Mama. (Mama went for a massage and dinner with Ashley, and ended up out ALL NIGHT after rushing Tina to the hospital to have her sweet baby girl. I got to be a part of the entire birth, and even CUT THE CORD! Truly an experience I'll cherish forever.)
Sweet Sydnie Layne, showing off all eight of her teeth!
Our backyard with some landscaping.
And this is how I found Little Miss, after realizing I couldn't see her at all on our video monitor. (I couldn't see her because she was tucked away in the corner of her crib like this!)

Bloggin'

So, one of the ladies on my message board posted this the other day, and I thought it was cute. It's so refreshing to know that I have that outlet where all these women, some I know personally and some I do not, are going through the exact same things as I am. Right now, it's the exhausting, newly-mobile, getting a ton of teeth all at once, and as a result of the teething, refusing various foods and not sleeping through the night anymore stage. We have our good days and our bad days, and some days when I wonder if I'll go every day for the rest of my life without some sort of small crisis arising like knocking brand new teeth on tile floors, getting fingers stuck in drawers that we know are "no-no's", and hitting foreheads and temples and noses on corners of walls and coffee tables. The list could honestly go on and on, but at the end of the day (or just right before the next nap), I get tiny little bear hugs and teethy, drooly kisses that make me forget ALL about how tired I am. And I think about how big she's already gotten since the day I met her, and how big she'll be one day. I wonder if I'll go into her room at night while she'd sleeping in 15 years, and just watch her, put my hand on my chest so my heart doesn't melt right out, and feel a couple tears fall.

You can "prepare" for your whole life to bring a child into the world. You can hear advice of those who've done it before you. And you can read ALL the books that tell you how to be a good parent. But no one can ever, ever, EVER explain to you the love and fullness that you feel when you see your daughter or son for the first time. Or the fear that overcomes you suddenly, thinking about how scary this world is, and that this baby of yours will one day be out in it without you. It's all very overwhelming sometimes; this love I have. Different from any other love I've felt.

This is such a busy year for us, and so many of our friends. Some about to have their first babies, and some about to have their second. And some friends who are trying so desperately to get pregnant in the first place. All these new little lives, and all the lives that those little lives are about to change FOREVER. All of this going on, and my daughter who will unbelievably be a YEAR OLD in a month and a half, and this growing belly of mine... it's all just so... amazing.

August

What a month so far! Sydnie and I have been home for almost 3 weeks, and are really enjoying our time, but we sure miss Matt!! I've learned A LOT about what I am capable of handling on my own, and have told a couple people that I'm not really sure what I'll do when Matt is home, and I have an extra set of hands to help out around here! I'm sure it'll be HEAVENLY to shower without little eyes watching me, wondering when I'll be done, or what she can get into while I'm busy.

This little girl has become QUITE the character these days, and also awfully rough-and-tumble! I keep adding things to my mental list that need to be childproofed... it's amazing how unsafe and not clean you realize your house is when there's a little crawler around. It doesn't help that the nesting bug has hit me full-force lately-   any bit of dust or dog hair throws me into a total cleaning/ sanitizing frenzy! Sydnie is also pulling herself up on furniture now, which leads me to believe that walking is just around the corner. Since Matt is away, we keep joking that I'll be the only mom to postpone the first steps so Daddy doesn't miss them. Can I just push her down for another month, before he gets home? KIDDING! But gosh, we'd both be so sad if one of us missed that milestone. Syd is also clapping, waving, and on the verge of blowing kisses. She is at SUCH a fun stage these days... exhausting, but fun!

Here are a couple new pictures of Little Miss:

In the new pool...

Getting into her wipes...

Getting brave... (this coffee table has since been moved!)

Playing with her toys...
Ashley took lots of pictures of Sydnie at the beach too!

A video of Sydnie waving!

Our little boy is growing bigger and bigger by the day, and as a result, I am too. This pregnancy has been such a breeze, and is really going by VERY fast. I can't believe that we really only have about 4 months left! Sydnie and I went for my 5 month check-up, and I had an ultrasound. Everything looks perfect, and Baby Boy is DEFINITELY a boy! He's much more camera shy than his sister was/is. Sydnie was already posing for the camera in the womb. We do have a name picked out, but hope to keep it a secret for as long as we can!

So, as you can tell, we've been keeping busy. The weather is just starting to get interesting, but we are safe and sound. It's been HOT, and when it's not raining, we try to get out in the pool as often as we can. To finish, I'll add some miscellaneous pictures, and pictures of the pool!

Our sconces on the back pool wall (where the little PVC pipes are sticking out) have been installed since I took these...

My first pie! Apple pie, from scratch. It was so good, but I still have lots to learn!
